Church welcoming the community out to a candy-filled event on Oct. 20

Have a scary-free good time with the Fellowship Alliance during their annual "Trunked or Treat" event.

Don’t have Halloween plans or looking to get a heavy dose of candy before the holiday? The Fellowship Alliance Chapel in Medford has your back.

On Oct. 20, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., the church is hosting a Trunked Treats and Tailgate event in its parking lot, open to the entire Medford community. So far, 40 cars are registered to attend and more can join by visiting MyFAC.org.

The event is rain or shine and children are welcome to arrive dressed up in their costumes.

Justin Wright, children’s pastor, said there will be a contest for the cars with various gift cards being given out as prizes, however, categories have not been finalized yet.

About two years ago, there was a ‘Beauty and the Beast’ set up with the dinner table, candelabras, and a teenage girl was dressed up like Belle with the yellow dress,” Wright said. “That one was extremely popular. It was fun and kids loved having a live person standing there.”

Cars, he added, cannot be scary or include anything gory or bloody, as the event’s being hosted by the church and they want to keep it kid-friendly.

Wright said those who bring their cars will be the ones providing the candy to the kids who stop by, but he will have some on the side for those who run out. He expects roughly 800 kids to show up.

We’re going to have blue pumpkins for trunks that have allergy-free items for the parents to know that they can go to them,” he said. Those same cars will also sometimes give out tattoos or knick-knacks for the kids to enjoy.

During the event, he said the church will have live music, games and activities in the welcome center, food trucks, a blow-up slide, a photo booth and movies with popcorn and coffee in the fellowship center.

Prior to the event’s 5 p.m. start, he said the church is hosting a tailgate-esque event starting at 2 p.m. for those who bring in their cars to meet and interact with one another.

“We’re trying to create an atmosphere of people hanging out with fellowship with one another, talk to people you don’t always get to talk to, we’ll have food trucks, people can bring their own food and such,” he said.

As families stop by the church, Wright said a welcome tent will be set up for them to get a map of the property to learn where everything is, and to obtain a free light-up wristband and a bag to hold candy in if they don’t have one of their own.

Some people didn’t like celebrating Halloween and they saw it celebrated in a new way,” he added. “Even if they come to get free candy, this is our way to tell them that they can come in and we’ll serve them and welcome them in.
