County to hold candlelight vigil at Atkinson Park Plaza

Press release from Gloucester County.

The Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders Addictions Task Force is sponsoring a candlelight vigil on Aug. 31 at James G. Atkinson Park Millennium Plaza (138 Bethel Mill Road, Sewell) at 7:30 p.m.

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day, a global event held annually to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. The day also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends and remembers those who have met with death or permanent injury as a result of drug overdose.

“Thousands of people die each year from substance abuse disorders,” Freeholder Jim Jefferson, Liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services said. “These individuals come from all walks of life. Gloucester County is not untouched. We want to commemorate those who have lost their lives as well as help bring some sense of community to their families and friends so they realize they are never alone.”

Jefferson said that the Gloucester County Addiction Task Force is recently formed and is comprised of community members that have been adversely impacted by addictions, or are working professionals in the field.

If you have a family member or friend that you would like to commemorate in this ceremony contact Robert Bamford at [email protected], or by calling (856) 384-6929.
