Working with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service and the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, the Cinnaminson Fire Department was able to obtain a Fire Safety House trailer that had been listed as “surplus” equipment by the federal government.

The Fire Safety House trailer will be used as a tool to teach children how to react to fires in the home. It has a smoke generation system that uses safe theatrical smoke to give the children a sense of what they would encounter should there be a fire in their home.

In addition, the trailer can be used to teach electrical, cooking and fireplace safety utilizing various props.

“We are always looking for ways to increase the services we provide at the lowest cost possible,” fire department chief William J. Kramer said. “We have been extremely successful with grants and now have utilized the Federal Surplus Property system to obtain this very valuable fire safety tool. I am extremely excited.”

“It is amazing to see what the officer’s staff and members of this department are capable of,” said Frank Ellison, chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners. “They are always thinking outside of the box for ways to save money and increase services. All Cinnaminson residents should be very proud of them. I know the Board of Fire Commissioners certainly is.”

“This is a piece of public education equipment that has the ability to ensure that kids can experience smoke, in a safe environment, instead of just trying to imagine it,” fire marshal Danny Norman said. “ We are going to make very good use of this trailer at all major community events.”

While the program requires the NJ Forrest Fire Service to retain ownership of the trailer for one year and make it available to the department through a shared services agreement, after one year it will be permanently turned over to the Cinnaminson Fire Department.
