An accomplished author, television host, personal coach, and motivational speaker, Bien will teach the audience how to find personal strength through self-love and to recognize that they deserve the lives they want. The series continues in May with two free financial literacy workshops designed specifically for women.

More than 41 percent of the female population struggles financially, according to the nonprofit group Wider Opportunities for Women. Women lacking competency in financial literacy can face serious obstacles such as significant credit card debt, defaulting on student loans and difficulty managing home finances. These statistics are reflected in the local community, evidenced by the number of women seeking the services of the JFCS Family Assistance Program, which provides food, personal care items, and financial assistance for basic needs. The EmpowHERment series was created in direct response to these trends. However, all women — even those who view themselves as financially secure — are encouraged to participate and to take advantage of this opportunity to build upon their financial literacy as they look to plan for retirement, care for their loved ones, and fund their charitable causes.

“Our talented JFCS staff developed the EmpowHERment series to encourage women of all ages to take control of their finances, provide for themselves and their families, and manage stress as they transition through the various stages of life,” said JFCS Executive Director Marla Meyers. “It is our hope that these important events will effect real change in the lives of women in South Jersey.” The three-part series will address emotional well-being and self-care, money management, creating and meeting financial goals, and establishing and maintaining credit.

In the first EmpowHerment event at the Katz JCC, Bien will share the Bouncing Back philosophy, which she developed as she overcame her own personal hardships.

Degreed in education, Bien teaches in the communication schools at Rowan University and Temple University. At Temple she also hosts her own TV program, “Bouncing Back with Lisa Bien!” where she helps guests confront serious personal and professional struggles with humor and raw honesty. In her books “Life Happens: Bounce Back!” and “Divorce Happens: Bounce Back!” Lisa lays out the “Bouncing Back” philosophy, which she developed as she overcame her own personal hardships. Her latest book, “111 Ways to Bounce Back,” continues this inspiring message, guiding others to bounce back from life’s challenges using tools such as focused journaling. Bien’s professional background in public relations and marketing has been of great advantage in helping her connect with diverse audiences. The EmpowHerment series continues with financial literacy workshops on Monday, May 6 and Tuesday, May 14. Both workshops will start at 7 p.m. at the Katz JCC Family Activity Center. Attendees will learn how to take charge of their financial health, establish a budget, save money, improve their credit, and reduce debt in a relaxed, non-judgmental setting. People are welcome to attend one or both workshops. To register, visit www.jfcssnj.org/finliteracy.

Grant funding for the EmpowHERment series is provided by the Jewish Women’s Foundation, a committee of the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey. For more information, contact Meredith Cohen at [email protected] or (856) 424–1333.
