Proceeds were distributed to a variety of charitable organizations
The Washington Township community is awash in color and not simply because of the holiday season. Thanks to an idea brainstormed by Washington Township High School junior George Gerber and with the assistance of his classmates Megan DeRuchie, Jeanine Morrow, Anhtina Ho and Talia Verrecchio, the WTHS Junior Class Council recently sold electric window candle lights for $10 apiece during the “Light Up Our Future” fundraiser. Customers had their choice of six different colored bulbs to accompany the window candles that were representative of a specific charity. Based on the candle sales of 193 units and individual gifts, donations that totaled more than $1,700 were distributed to these specific charities:
Yellow: Robin’s Nest (for South Jersey community-based programs)
Red: American Red Cross (for hurricane relief)
Pink: South Jersey Breast Cancer Coalition (from breast cancer research)
Green: Washington Township Environmental Commission (for local causes)
Blue: Ronald McDonald House (for families at Camden facility facing medical challenges)
Purple: Epilepsy Foundation of New Jersey (for epilepsy research)
All donors received an electric window candle kit that contained one electric candle light with automatic dusk/dawn, on/0ff light sensor, two clear bulbs, one suction cup candle clamp and one colored bulb to support the charity of the donor’s choice.
“I commend George Gerber and his fellow class officers for their work,” Class advisor Carol Costello said. “It was a successful fundraiser, particularly at the elementary level.”
