Do something: Figure skating, light shows and more

Also, catch a basketball game in Philadelphia or stop by an anime convention at RCGC

It may be cold outside, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things to do around the region this weekend. Check out what events and activities are taking place.

In Washington Township

  • Enjoy free skating, free skate rentals and free professional instruction with the Hollydell Figure Skating Club at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, at the Hollydell Ice Arena. For more information, or to register, please email Amy Griffith at [email protected], or call (856) 589–5599.
  • On Sunday, Jan. 7, raise funds to support Team USA figure skaters and their families competing in the 2018 Olympics, as well as the local Holydell Figure Skating Club, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Holydell Ice Arena. Around South Jersey

  • Camden County’s Winterfest continues this weekend at Jack Curtis Stadium in Cooper River Park. The county’s outdoor ice skating rink will be open on Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children ages 5 to 12, seniors and veterans.   • Kotoricon 2018 will take over the Dr. Ross Beitzel Art Gallery at Rowan College of Gloucester County this weekend, The convention will be open from 4:30 p.m. on Friday until 9 p.m. on Saturday. This anime convention features panels, performances, dealers, artists, and a charity auction. This year’s theme is love and romance. Tickets are $33 per person and must be purchased online.   • The Katz JCC is opening its doors to the community on Sunday for its annual winter open house. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees will enjoy facility tours, are welcome to join in on a group fitness class, take part in activities for children and meet JCC department representatives.   • Anyone who wants to learn more about caring for backyard chickens can attend a Camden County Chickens class on Sunday. The organization will host a program entitled, “The Basics of Raising Backyard Chickens in the Suburbs and City,” from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Camden County Parks Environmental Center in Cherry Hill. Learn how easy it is to set up a coop, select hens and care for them year-round as well as the legal issues in your town and what you can do about them. The cost to attend is $10 per person. At the Jersey Shore

  • Saturday is the last chance for guests to check out Historic Smithville’s Holiday Light Show. The light show will be open on Saturday from dark to 8:30 p.m. and will take place at Lake Meone at Historic Smithville. The show includes more than 120 Christmas trees cand more than 50,000 Christmas lights, floating on Lake Meone. An orchestrated show of lights and music is played during the event. In Philadelphia

  • The Villanova University men’s basketball team has a big game on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center against Marquette University at 8 p.m. Prior to the game, Xfinity Live at the South Philadelphia sports complex will host a pre-game party where fans will have a chance to meet some of the players.The party begins at 5:30 p.m., with the Wildcat Walk beginning at 6 p.m. The event will also include visits from the Villanova cheerleaders and Will D.
