District, BOE recognize teachers and services professionals of the year
Standing ovations, noisemakers, cheers and applause filled the Washington Township High School 11–12 auditorium on Tuesday, Jan. 23, as the district and Board of Education celebrated the 2017–18 teachers and educational services professionals of the year. Surrounded by colleagues, friends and family, the selected educators were recognized with a plaque and golden apple for their dedication to their career and students.
Mayor Joann Gattinelli provides State of the Township Address at council meeting
At last week’s council meeting, Mayor Joann Gattinelli presented a State of the Township Address, looking back on last year’s accomplishments and forward to this year’s goals. Also, Eagle Scout Josh Dicks and Washington Township police officer Gary Egizi recognized for dedication, hard work in the community. Council also introduced an ordinance on first reading setting the salary ranges for certain officers and employees of the municipality, as well as an ordinance that would decrease the number of administrative positions in the Washington Township Police Department to potentially allow for additional patrol officers later this year.
Reigning Gloucester County teacher of the year rescues choking student
Fifth-grade basic skills math teacher Domenick Renzi performed the Heimlich maneuver on fifth-grader Mark Albert. On Monday, Jan. 22, Gloucester County teacher of the year and state teacher of the year finalist Renzi happened to be walking by the school’s cafeteria when Albert came running out of the cafeteria and toward Renzi in the main foyer, unable to breathe. Albert was choking on a mozzarella stick and was frantic.
