Professional musicians provide insight, encouragement at music festival

Eighth-grade and high school string students received advice at the 32nd annual ASTA Solo and Ensemble Festival

Violist Adekya Shagidullina instructs WTHS freshmen Carla Fok and Jessamy Diaz on the importance of tempo.

Respected and highly decorated professional musicians provided invaluable insight and priceless encouragement to the district’s eighth-grade and high school string students during Washington Township High School’s 32nd Annual American String Teachers’ Association Solo and Ensemble Festival at the school on Feb. 28th.

Cellist and pianist Michal Schmidt encourages WTHS students, from left, Sreeta Basu, Michael Morris and Jared Mitchell to bring happiness to their performance of “Festival March.”

A similar festival for sixth and seventh grade students, hosted this year at Orchard Valley Middle School is planned for Thursday, March 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Violinist Luigi Mazzocchi is pleased with the performance of “Symphony No. 4” by Bunker Hill Middle School eighth-graders Allison Cangelosi, Sanaa Graddy, Nicholas Campbell, Mackenzie Sozio and Arlington Scott.

The Festival provides an opportunity for young musicians to perform in chamber groups and as soloists. The ensembles perform for an audience of their peers and also are critiqued by highly qualified clinicians. The festival is organized in an open, master class setting so that performers and the audience can listen to and learn from the clinician’s comments.
