The Moon Festival at The Voorhees Care and Rehabilitation Center features Chef Poon

Mid-Autumn Moon Festival was celebrated Monday, Sept. 16 at The Voorhees Care and Rehabilitation Center along with many guest of the Chinese community.

“This year’s program included wonderful carving demonstrations by renowned chef Joseph Poon, marital art and Tai Chi demo by Master Kam Cheung,” said Grace Kong, director of Chinese Community with The Voorhees Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Chef Poon dazzled the crowd with a mixture of carvings and comedy. Chef carved fruits and vegetables into animal shapes and flowers likes dragons, roses and swans. To excite the audience he presented a newly carved white rose from a potato on bended knee to a single female resident.

“The wedding will take place Feb. 31!” Poon jokingly said.

What a jokester! Super Chef Joe Poon is proud to volunteer 500 hours annually to many serviced-based groups.

“I treat these seniors like they are my mother and father. I come to put smiles on their faces and make them laugh. It is my version of pain therapy,” he said.

Some of the resident’s relatives surprised The Voorhees Care and Rehabilitation Center’s Chinese Seniors with special moon cakes. The residents and guests enjoyed delicious Chinese food and traditional moon cakes served especially during this festival.

A local Voorhees community leader, Mr. K.K. Wu, owner of Elena Wu’s restaurant remarked, “I had a great time to see many friends and to enjoy good foods. Again, thank you … for the invitation.”

Many important Chinese leaders visited and Ms. Mabel Chin, Chairwoman of the Hip Sing Association honored the crowd with her beautiful opera serenade.
