Cinnaminson Police Officer Garrett McLaverty honored by MADD
As a Cinnaminson High School freshman, Garrett McLaverty knew being in law enforcement was something he wanted to do as a career. Since then, the 24-year-old police officer has worked hard and was rewarded earlier this month.
On June 14, at Rutgers University, McLaverty was awarded the Best Cop in Burlington County award, and an additional award for the most DUI arrests in Cinnaminson Township by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
MADD, founded in 1980, is a non-profit organization that seeks to stop drunk driving, support those affected by drunk driving, prevent underage drinking and strive for stricter impaired driving policy.
“To be recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving for the Top Cop in Burlington County was an absolute honor,” McLaverty said. “I was very excited, and I definitely have to give credit to various other officers that were also presented that title at the ceremony as well, from other agencies. I am lucky enough to work in a department with constant support from my peers, and supervisors.”
Starting his career as a part of the North Wildwood Police Department, McLaverty then joined Delanco Township for almost one year. This September, McLaverty will be hitting his three-year anniversary with the Cinnaminson Police Department.
“It is one of the most rewarding feelings any officer can have, to see that you are working in a profession that you’re able to make a difference on a daily basis. It is what we have all signed up for, and I could not imagine being in a different line of work,” McLaverty said.
Additional to his daily work of keeping the Burlington County area safe, McLaverty is still studying to obtain his bachelor’s degree from Wilmington University. After completing his associate’s degree from Burlington County College, McLaverty is expected to complete his bachelor’s in the spring of 2018.
McLaverty is the first member of his family to become a police officer, which makes him proud. However, several close friends are on the police force, which makes it easy for them all to relate when they get together.
“I have a lot of close friends in law enforcement that I have either met in the police academy, or along the way on the job. It has been easy to connect with other cops because we can all relate to the job, have similar schedules, and can coordinate days off to get together.” he said.
Being the first in his family to become a police officer is quite an accomplishment for McLaverty. But when asked about his inspiration for choosing the career, the Cinnaminson native stayed true to his roots.
“My inspiration would definitely have to be my mother. She is the most caring, selfless person you’ll ever encounter and is loved by many,” McLaverty said. “She has absolutely supported me every step of the way.”
McLaverty fought for his dream of being a police officer. He also has the same beliefs for any teenager or young person who wants to make the police force their career as well.
“I would encourage them to do so, tell them to continue to work hard, and pursue their dream,” McLaverty said.
