Palmyra decides against referendum to replace 1992 Ladder Truck
In July, Palmyra Council decided against holding a referendum for the purchase of a new ladder truck for the fire department. This process has been going on throughout 2017, and council has finally decided to move forward with this request. The department’s current ladder truck, which has been in use since 1992, is well past the service timeline. According to Palmyra Fire Chief Richard Dreby, the department’s only ladder reached 25 years of service this year, five years past the 20-year timeline when the department has typically replaced its ladders per department policy and the recommendation of insurance underwriters.
Palmyra’s Andrew Countryman has been rockin’ out for 15+ years
For Palmyra native Andrew Countryman, music has always been a huge part of his life. Since the age of 11, Countryman enjoyed playing music and becoming better at every instrument he tried. His hard rock band, Hot Pickup, played at the Palmyra Summer Concert Series on July 25 to a crowd of roughly 40 people. Teamed with guitarist Malcolm Hazel and bassist Eli Schafer, Countryman sees the band improving as they continue to fight for recognition.
Board of Education race to be uncontested in Palmyra
This year’s Board of Education race in Palmyra will be uncontested, as three candidates are running to fill three open seats for full, three-year terms. Incumbent board member Sean Toner and newcomers John Liebe and Judy Belton are all running unopposed, according to the Burlington County Clerk’s office. The Palmyra Board of Education election race will take place on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8.
Palmyra Police seeking assistance regarding July 31 shooting
On July 31, at approximately 10 p.m., the Palmyra Police Department was dispatched to the area of West 6th Street and Vine Street for a gunshot call with possible shooting victims. Units arrived in the area and spoke with the victims, one of whom had sustained a minor injury to his leg from one of a few rounds that had been fired by an unknown suspect. This incident may have stemmed from a physical fight that occurred moments before the call about a block away. The victim did not require transport to the hospital and refused medical treatment.
