BCC hosting free disaster preparedness seminar

Are you prepared if another super-storm, hurricane, or natural disaster hits Burlington County? Do you know what should be included in a go-bag? The Burlington County Freeholder’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the Burlington County College (BCC) Bonner AmeriCorps Leader Program will help answer these questions and more at a free disaster preparedness seminar on Thursday, April 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at BCC’s Mount Laurel campus.

BCC’s Bonner AmeriCorps Leaders are committed to having a positive influence on the community through service and work to increase civic engagement. Three student leaders, Anthony Caruso III, Tysheda Williams and James Murphy, have been assisting with disaster preparedness, response and recovery at the OEM office for the past two years. They will present the FEMA Disaster Preparedness for Citizens at the free seminar.

“The Bonner AmeriCorps Leader Program establishes the framework, skills and settings students need to be positively engaged and involved with the community. This seminar will showcase how students in our Bonner AmeriCorps Leader Program serve the community,” BCC President David C. Hespe said. “The Burlington County Office of Emergency Management gives our student leaders the opportunity and know-how to see our county residents through some of life’s most challenging moments.”

“This County and College partnership is an excellent opportunity for young adults to learn about the importance of being prepared in the event of a disaster,” Joe Donnelly, Burlington County Freeholder Director, said. “It is also a way for students to support the community with valuable skills they have acquired during training.”

Kevin Tuno, OEM Coordinator, and Steve King, OEM Deputy Coordinator, will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the county’s role in emergency management, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

Pemberton Community Emergency Response Team member Tom Gilbert will lead a hands-on presentation on go-bag necessities for both car and home.

This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Register at http://tinyurl.com/bccpresentation.

The seminar will be held in Laurel Hall, room 320, on BCC’s Mount Laurel campus, located along route 38 at 500 College Circle.
