One Love Animal Rescue announced today they have taken in an abused and abandoned dog from Southern New Jersey. The shelter intake photographs showed a mostly hairless young lab mix with red, raw, and scabbed skin. “Buckley” was a stray brought to the shelter by Animal Control.
After Buckley’s seven-day stray hold was over, One Love brought him into their rescue and immediately took him to the veterinarian. His medical evaluation revealed that he is approximately 10 to 12 months old, underweight, and positive for heartworm disease, Lyme disease, and Demodectic Mange. Buckley’s recovery will take months, but One Love is prepared to give him all the care he needs. His personality is sweet and gentle despite the neglect he endured.
“Buckley survived brutal neglect and cruelty,” said Sherri Smith, the rescue’s chairwoman. “When we saw his picture and story, we quickly made room for him in our rescue. We will spare no expense of time or money to help him put this nightmare behind him. After all he’s been through; he deserves to start new life as a healthy and cherished family pet.”
With the help of social media and a couple of news organizations, One Love has already raised about $1500 for Buckley’s care. Rescues cannot take in seriously ill animals without this kind of support.
“It makes us really proud and thankful that we are able to help Buckley,”said Stephanie Hawkins, co-founder of One Love. “Our rescue has a lot of experience with caring for very sick dogs, so we are prepared to give sweet Buckley anything he needs to recover both physically and emotionally.”
