Police director in stable condition after accident

By AUBRIE GEORGE | The Moorestown Sun

Moorestown’s Director of Police, Harry Johnson, was in stable condition after a car accident that officials believe may have been caused by a heart attack.

The accident occurred on Jan. 19 around 5:56 p.m. at the intersection of Mount Laurel Road and Route 38 in Mount Laurel Township, according to a statement released by the Moorestown Township Police Department.

According to the statement, Johnson was operating an unmarked Moorestown Police Department vehicle traveling southbound on Mount Laurel Road toward Route 38 when his vehicle crossed the intersection and struck a 2007 Toyota Matrix waiting to proceed at a green traffic signal.

Officials believe Johnson may have suffered a heart attack just prior to the crash.

“We’re not really sure what happened, it appeared to be a heart attack at the time,” Lt. Howard Mann said.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 46-year-old female of Mount Laurel, was not injured in the crash and damage to both vehicles was minimal. Johnson hit the other vehicle while traveling at a low speed, Mann said.

“All things considered, there was hardly any damage to either car,” Johnson said.

Johnson was taken to JFK Hospital in Cherry Hill and was later transported to Cooper University Hospital in Camden where he was in stable and fair condition, Mann said last week.

Johnson, 57, has been a member of the Moorestown Police Department since 1983.

He was appointed as director of police in 1999. Mann has taken control of the Moorestown Police Department in Johnson’s absence.
