Kenneth Long, 87, formerly of Moorestown, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 24.
Long, son of Grover C. Long and Margaret Boyle Long, was born and raised in the Albany, NY area, but spent most of his working years in South Jersey. He relocated to Cary, NC in 2013 and was a resident there until his passing.
He was an engineer for RCA for 44 years, retiring in 1994. He started his career as a field engineer for the RCA Service Company’s government services division in 1950, later transferring to defense equipment design in Camden, Moorestown and Hightstown.
He worked on shipboard target designation and missile defense equipment, radar systems, missile launch suites and weather satellites. Ken was a graduate of Roessleville High School in Colonie, NY, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, and Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia.
He was a Navy veteran, having served as a fire control petty officer aboard the destroyer USS Stembel in the South Pacific during WWII. He was an amateur radio operator (KA2GMP).
Long was a member of the Roessleville High School Alumni Association, the Tin Can Sailors and the USS Kidd/DesRon48 Association, the American Radio Relay League and the South Jersey Radio Association. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Moorestown and a friend of the Moorestown Christadelphian ecclesia.
Beloved husband of 59 years to the late Una (Jackie), he is survived by loving sons Andrew and Kevin of Moorestown, Barry (Robin) and Kenneth (Susan) of Raleigh, NC,, Robert (Tracey) of Wilbraham, Mass., Thomas (Adrienne) of San Diego and daughter Virginia (Scott) Newkirk of Mickleton, N.J.
Also, surviving is a sister, Marjorie Mowrey of Baltimore and eight grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1 at the First Presbyterian Church on Bridgeboro Road in Moorestown.
