The Moorestown Police Department hosts Medicine Disposal Site on Sept. 27

The Moorestown Police Department will be hosting a Prescription and Over the Counter Medicine Disposal Site as part of the continued 2014 DEA Operation Take Back NJ initiative. The medicine turn in will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the front parking lot of the Police Department, 1245 North Church Street, Suite 2.

Residents may dispose of medication either in its original container or by removing medication from its container and disposing directly into the drug disposal box. If the original container is submitted, residents are encouraged to remove the prescription label if it contains any personal identifying information. Liquid products, such as cough medicine, should remain sealed in their original container. The depositor should ensure that the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage.

Syringes and other sharp instruments will not be accepted.

The mission of the Drug Enforcement Administration New Jersey Division Operation Take Back NJ is to provide a safe and legal method for the citizens of New Jersey to dispose their unwanted, unused and expired medicines.

Each year, experts say, a growing number of teenagers quietly turn to a seemingly unlikely source to score drugs — their parents’ medicine cabinets. According to one of the most recent studies, Monitoring the Future, from the University of Michigan, between 1997 and 2007, treatment admissions for prescription painkillers increased more than 400 percent. In addition, between 2004 and 2008, the number of visits to hospital emergency department involving the non-medical use of narcotic painkillers increased 111 percent.
