The Department of Parks and Rec Column

As the Department of Parks & Recreation enters into the Season of Giving we are reminded of all of the wonderful collaborations that happen throughout the year — from tournaments and special events, to the day to day contributions volunteers make… we are thankful for the participation that helps the Department of Parks & Recreation stay true to its mission: to serve the needs and interests of Moorestown residents by providing constructive and creative leisure opportunities that strengthen community life. As we reflect, we want to thank all of our volunteer coaches and encourage continued participation.

The biggest, on-going, collaborative effort the department participates in is the facilitation of youth sports leagues which require parent involvement and coaching.

Many of you may say, “I’ve never played [insert sport here]! How could I ever coach it?”

My response to that statement is the same as when someone tells me they can’t cook. If you can read the rules, follow directions and just want to spend time with your children in a fun atmosphere, then you can coach. You don’t have to be “the perfect coach.” You don’t have to have a record of undefeated seasons under your belt. You just have to want young people to grow and learn through participation in team sports.

Every season, new Recreation Programs roll out for Moorestown youth — from soccer to basketball to lacrosse and more. Each season, generous parent volunteers step forward and offer their time and talents, to help coach these young people and help them to develop fundamental skills and the foundation for good sportsmanship. Recreation programs have always held the primary function of making activities available for all residents — and in order to do so, all of these programs require the support of our residents and youth sports require the support of our children’s biggest advocates — parents.

As we enter into the winter season, please consider donating your time, your talents and your generous spirit to one of the many Recreation Programs being offered. As the department opens enrollment for Recreation Youth Basketball, volunteer coaches are needed. As a parent, I understand the pull we all experience. We have to juggle and manage multiple schedules to make sure our children can take advantage of the many activities available to them. With that management of time comes choices. We hope that this winter, parents will make the choice to help as a volunteer if they are registering their children in Recreation Sports programs.

To register for Recreation Programs, please visit www.moorestown.nj.us/253/Parks-Recreation and select your season and program. To volunteer as a coach, please make sure you register yourself when registering your child and indicate which grade/league you are volunteering for. The Department of Parks and Recreation appreciates all who volunteer and participate.
