Obituary: Paul Warren Whitney

Moorestown resident Paul Warren Whitney passed away peacefully on April 11 at the Samaritan Hospice Unit in Mt. Holly at ageĀ 89.

Whitney was born on Jan. 4, 1928. One of five brothers, Whitney was raised in Camden where his father, Rev. Augustus Dodge Whitney, Sr., was a minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Camden. His mother, Anne Warren Whitney, taught French, English and Spanish at Hatch Jr. High School. After moving to Moorestown, she continued to teach at the Moorestown Junior and Senior HighĀ Schools.

Whitney was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and attended the University of Pennsylvania, his motherā€™s alma matter, under the GI bill. He graduated with a BA in Literature and went on to earn his PhD from the University of Maryland. He taught at Albright College in Reading, Pa. and eventually settled his family in Moorestown, teaching at Rutgers in Camden and RosemontĀ College.

Whitney was the father of Lynn Carol Whitney of Moorestown and Delanco, Paul Dodge Whitney of Moorestown and Marlton, the brother of John (Helen) Whitney of Moorestown, Mark (Irmgard) of Stony Brook, NY, the late Augustus Dodge Whitney, III and Lt. Col. Richard Keller Whitney. He was the grandfather of Graham Whitney Goldman and his wife Megan of Brooklyn, NY. Whitney will be remembered fondly by his many nieces and nephews and great nieces andĀ nephews.

Services and interment will beĀ private.

Whitney was a lifelong educator, learner and lover of literature and theĀ arts.
