Food trucks on Main Street are expected in July

More foot traffic is expected on Main Street with the use of food trucks; councilman Chris Buoni discusses defensive gun statistics.

After several meetings of discussion on food trucks being placed on Main Street to create more foot traffic, an ordinance recently passed Medford Council on second reading.

The food trucks are aimed to encourage people to visit the shops and restaurants along the street, and will likely be on Main Street once a month on a Thursday or Friday.

The ordinance stated the food trucks would be stationed on Main Street from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. during their designated weekday.

Once the food trucks are up and running and the success rates are evaluated, there will be discussion on the possibility to have the food trucks stationed on Main Street twice per month.

There will be a maximum of six food trucks allowed on Main Street at a time, and there are plans to create variety through having each vendor sell different types of food.

The maximum decibel rate for generators has been noted at 70 decibels to ensure the generator does not produce too much noise.

Mayor Chuck Watson hopes to have the food trucks selected to be stationed on Main Street sometime in July.

Aside from food trucks, Councilman Chris Buoni expressed thoughts on defensive gun incidents that have taken place. He stated statistics on the number of people who have successfully protected themselves with the use of guns ranges from 300,000 to a million people per year, according to the CDC.

Buoni also stated the numbers vary depending on the source. He noted the numbers the government published are that 67,000 lives are saved from guns used for defensive purposes.

“There are a number of studies that have been done, and I think anytime that we’re going to look into and have a conversation about gun violence and how many people are killed by guns, I think that we actually need to take a closer look,” Buoni said.

The next meeting is scheduled for July 10 at 7 p.m. at the Public Safety Building located at 91 Union St.
