Trunk or Treating comes to Medford

The Woman’s Club of Medford, in collaboration with the Village of Taunton Forge Shopping Center, announced that it is bringing “Trunk or Treating” to Medford this Halloween.

In suburban communities across the country, “trunk-or-treating” — also known as Halloween tailgating — is the latest twist on the quintessentially American tradition of door-to-door candy-collecting, bringing Halloween to the safety of church, school or shopping center parking lots, turning the backs of vehicles into the new heavily decorated front porch.

“Trunk-or-treating” also solves the suburban and rural drawback in which homes built a half-mile apart make the simple act of going door-to-door unrealistic. Where sub-division neighbors are sometimes strangers, these safe alternative community events substitute family-friendly entertainment for the uncertainty parents feel when escorting their children through neighborhoods.

Said Kathy Cullen, president of the Woman’s Club, “From the research we’ve done, this is great for the kids, but the parents end up having just as much fun.”

The Medford Trunk or Treat event will be held on Halloween Day from 3 to 5 p.m. Parents who wish to participate in candy distribution should come in a vehicle and be prepared to distribute candy from their trunk. Decorations are optional, but prizes will be given for the best decorated trunk.

Escorted children are invited to walk through the designated area of the parking lot to collect candy. The Woman’s Club will also lead a parade around the shopping center so that the children can collect treats from the stores. Prizes will also be awarded to the best-costumed children.

The shopping center stores will also have snacks and other munchies available for participants.

The Taunton Forge Shopping Center is located at the intersection of Taunton Boulevard and Tuckerton Roads.
