‘Art Goes to School’ program needs new volunteers

The program reaches five elementary schools in Medford.

The “Art Goes to School” program brings reproductions of important art to each school’s art room. The program reaches students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Each year reproductions are on loan from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and introduced to the children by Art Goes to School volunteers. The program reaches into five elementary schools in Medford, which are Kirby’s Mill, Chairville, Allen, Taunton Forge and Cranberry Pines.

Volunteers meet weekly at the Kirby’s Mill Elementary School on Monday mornings. Together they discuss each piece of art. Information on the picture is provided with the portfolio and the committee brainstorms and creates a lesson plan to fit each grade level. Prep meetings are completed by December. Through the group’s interpretation and research, they guide the students to understand art and help each age level appreciate their experience.

Presently this program is in need of new volunteers. The group consists of mothers, grandmothers, retired teachers or anyone who has an interest in art or would like to learn more about art and artists. No prior art background is needed. A love of children, an opportunity to meet new friends and the desire to explore something new in your life is all you need to be a member of this enriching program.
