Between 44 and 54 million people provide care for a loved one in the United States. Family caregiving accounts for 80 percent of the long term care provided in the US at a value of more than $300 billion annually. In New Jersey, there are over 1.06 million caregivers alone.
Caregivers are the unrecognized heroes of our everyday lives. Therefore, CareOne and the Elder and Disability Law Offices of Jerold E. Rothkoff are teaming up to sponsor South Jersey’s first “Caregiver Award.”
One certified nursing assistant and one family caregiver will be recognized at an awards ceremony at the CareOne Assisted Living Community in Evesham in November 2009 — National Caregiving Month.
If you feel that someone deserves to be recognized for their undying spirit, patience, and caregiving compassion, send in your nominations and a brief essay of no more than 500 words by Sept. 30, to Law Offices of Jerold E. Rothkoff, 911 Kings Highway South, Cherry Hill, New Jersey 08034, Attn: Caregiver Award Initiative, or e-mail your nominations to [email protected]
The nominee must embody the following characteristics:
• Communicates sensitively with their loved one or patient and the patient’s loved ones, listening carefully, showing empathy and instilling a sense of hope.
• respects their loved one’s or patient’s values, culture, choices and decisions.
• understands the significance of the patient’s family and community.
