Academic Hall of Fame to honor Cherokee grads

In celebration of Cherokee High School’s 35th Anniversary, the Lenape Regional High School District has established an Academic Hall of Fame to honor the outstanding accomplishments of members of the Cherokee Family — alumni, former staff and supporters. Founded in 1975, Cherokee High School was built on a foundation of excellence which continues today and which will be honored by the newly established Academic Hall of Fame.

The inaugural class of the Cherokee High School Academic Hall of Fame will be inducted at the school’s annual Academic Awards Program in May 2011. Inductees’ names will be permanently displayed on a plaque at the high school — a visual and positive example to generations of Cherokee High School students as they strive to master the rigors of academia, social/emotional growth, and character development.

Similar academic halls of fame have been established at Lenape and Shawnee High Schools; Seneca High School will initiate next year. New “classes” will be inducted every four years at each high school. This Academic Hall of Fame is separate and distinct from the already existing Athletic Hall of Fame at each of the high schools.

Inductees will be selected based on at least one of the following criteria: job-related achievements; professional honors and awards; professional affiliations/publications; civic or community involvement; personal achievements/accomplishments; positive impact on the communities in the Lenape Regional High School District; and other appropriate qualifications. Alumni nominees are first eligible for selection ten (10) calendar years following graduation.

The deadline for nominations is noon on Jan. 14. Nominees will then be invited to complete an application form by Jan. 31. A diverse and broad-based selection committee consisting of members of the Cherokee Family will review all nominations and select inductees for the inaugural class of the Cherokee High School Academic Hall of Fame by March 1.

Anyone may submit a nominee for consideration. Nomination forms are posted on the LRHSD Web site, www.lrhsd.org, the Lenape Alumni Web site, www.lenapealumni.org, and on the Web sites of the LRHSD schools (Lenape, Shawnee, Cherokee and Seneca) and are available at the main office of Cherokee High School and at each of the district high schools.
