National Night Out is a unique crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the Evesham Police Department, Neighborhood Watch and the local Target Store. The event is taking place at the Evesham Township Municipal Building parking lot, 984 Tuckerton Road, on Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 6–9 p.m.

The department cordially invites the public to be a part of this event, which will include the department and Evesham Fire Department showcasing their specialty details, including tours of emergency vehicles and tours of the Evesham Police Station. Other participating agencies include the Evesham Fire Department, Burlington County Sheriffs Department, local businesses, civic groups and neighborhood organizations. Crime Prevention Materials and information will be on display, and distributed by Neighborhood Watch and Police Crime Preventions.

The National Association of Town Watch Association introduced national Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” in 1984. The program was the brainchild of NATW Executive Director Matt A. Peskin. That first year, 400 communities in 23 states participated in National Night Out. Nationwide, 2.5 million Americans took part in 1984. Participants turned on their front porch lights to show their solidarity with local law enforcement. The citizens were sending a message that they would not tolerate crime in their neighborhood.

While the traditional ‘lights on’ and front porch vigils remain a part of NNO, activities have expanded considerably over the years to include block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, festivals, neighborhood walks, safety fairs, contests, rallies and meetings.
