Year in Review: Garden Club of Marlton turns 40

Every year, the Garden Club gives back to its community

Beverly Thompson of The Garden Club of Marlton speaks during the club’s 40th membership tea on Sept. 8. First founded in September of 1976, this year the club will be celebrating its 40th anniversary. Thompson is the only current member of the club to have attended its first meeting.

It was 40 years of flowers, food and fun for the Garden Club of Marlton, which celebrated turning 40 years old in September.

The seeds for the Garden Club of Marlton were first planted in 1976 when several Marlton residents gathered to start their own garden club — a first for the town.

What grew from that original meeting was more than just a garden club, as the Garden Club of Marlton would spend the next four decades serving its community.

Whether it’s organizing the Wiley Christian Retirement Community’s annual flower show or maintaining the potted plants along Main Street, every year the Garden Club of Marlton has been about giving back to the community as much as it has actually gardening.

At the time of the club’s 40th anniversary celebration, Beverly Thompson, the club’s only remaining charter member who attended the club’s first meeting, attributed the club’s long history to members bonding over more than just gardening.

“Everybody truly cares about each other … that’s what we do besides gardening and doing things for the community; we’re there for each other,” Thompson said.
