The following information is on file with the Evesham Township Police Department:
On Aug. 16, police say a 91-year-old Evesham resident received a phone call from a male claiming to be a New York City Public Defender.
According to police, the male scammer claimed that the elderly male’s granddaughter was arrested by NYPD for drug charges and $2,000 bail was needed for her release.
Fearing for his granddaughter’s safety, police say the victim provided the scammer with his credit card information, which was then charged in the amount of $8,000.
In response to this situation, the Evesham Police Department advises against residents giving out personal or credit card information to someone on the phone unless the caller is known or the resident has originated the call.
