A Cherry Hill man admitted in court Wednesday that he tried to have his fishing boat sunk for the insurance money, according to the Courier-Post.
The boat didn’t even sink. But the insurance scam sure did.
Scott Tran, 38, conspired with at least two other men to scuttle his commercial fishing vessel, the Alexander II, off the coast of Cape May in August 2009, according to court records. He had hoped to collect $400,000 from the insurance, prosecutors said.
But the boat just stayed where it was.
His two co-defendants also admitted guilt to similar conspiracy charges. Manh Nguyen, 58, of Philadelphia, pleaded guilty the same day as Tran. Crew member Christopher Martin, 39, of Wildwood, admitted guilt Monday.
All three defendants entered pleas before U.S. District Judge Renee Marie Bumb in Camden federal court.
