Scam emails hit students in Monroe

Student email accounts were hit with a wave of recent phishing and scam emails at the Monroe Township Public Schools in August.

The district’s technology team was informed of an email circulating to student Gmail accounts that seemed to come from a school staff member. The email, with the subject line, “JOB OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS,” included information regarding a remote work opportunity. Based on information collected, the email provided a link that directed students to provide bank account information so a check could be deposited into their account.

District officials have determined that the email is a scam. They advised students to delete the email immediately and contact one’s bank if they provided any personal or bank information.

The technology team has made every effort to block and lock out the bad actor and will be monitoring for any additional scam attempts, school officials said.
