Township police mark Junior Police Academy graduation

Voorhees police will celebrate the graduation of cadets in Junior Police Academy Class 9 today.

The ceremony marks the culmination of a week-long program that took place during the week of July 8. Cadets underwent rigorous training and instruction in various aspects of law enforcement and participated in daily drill and ceremony exercises, as well as physical fitness training.

Cadets also completed training for such functions as fingerprinting, internet safety and bike safety. The academy included practical experiences with mock scenarios, K-9 demonstrations, patrol tactics, crime scene investigations and fitness routines. The cadets also examined police vehicles, the emergency call center and local fire departments.

” I think it’s a great program, because it helps my middle schooler decide on a career when he graduates high school,” said Voorhees resident Amber Howard.

Each academy member was awarded a certificate of completion at the the end of camp that recognizes their significant achievements and the new skills they’ve acquired.

The Junior Police Academy is made possible through the collaborative efforts of several local agencies, including the township fire department, the Camden County Department of Public Safety, the county sheriff’s department bomb squad, the Lower Camden County Regional Special Response Team and the Voorhees school district.

Township mom Brandy Brocco shared her enthusiasm about the program.

“My son had a lot of fun,” she noted, “and it made him realize that he wants to go into the military and also the K-9 unit. He can’t wait to join next year.”
