Deptford’s council and its parks and recreation committee will host the third annual senior day luau party at the community center on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The free event is open to township residents who are ages 55 and up.
“It’s an economical great time,” said Mayor Paul Medany. “We’re trying to get the word out about the event as it helps you get out and meet friends you normally wouldn’t meet.”
The community center will be decked out with a Hawaiian theme and a tropical vibe. Related music will be provided by a DJ and attendees are invited to wear Hawaiian shirts and tropical-themed clothing.
Seniors will get free leis and hula skirts to wear as they participate in games, and pictures can be taken at a photo section in the community center that will have a beach background. Food and frozen treats will also be provided.
The mayor, council members and volunteers in the parks and rec department are expected to attend the luau so they can interact with residents. Last year’s version drew about 300 people, according to Medany.
“… We’re hoping that more come out this year,” he said. “The more the merrier … We’ll welcome any newcomers with open arms.”
The luau party is among several events held for seniors in Deptford. They include monthly bingo events, the monthly Phillies Game Day Special at the township senior center and the over-85 birthday luncheon at Auletto Caterers.
