Joanne Gibbs’ story is not just one of artistic achievement, but of overcoming personal tragedy. After her husband died of COVID, she turned to her artwork for solace and strength.

“Art became my relief,” said Gibbs, whose interest in art began in childhood.

“I loved to pencil draw,” she recalled. “It’s become a passion since then.”

While life’s demands often diverted her focus from art, Gibbs found herself returning to it with newfound determination. Experimenting with different mediums, she discovered a love for acrylic painting and watercolor, honing her skills through weekly classes and personal exploration.

Her journey as an artist took a pivotal turn when Gibbs discovered the arts center and gallery. After securing a space there, she found a supportive community that has nurtured her talent for the last five years. She now teaches virtual classes there in crotchet and coloring.

When asked about her influences, Gibbs acknowledged the artists she admires and how she draws inspiration from them.

“There are a lot of artists,” the Clementon resident noted. “I love looking at different kinds of artwork.”

Gibbs’ current exhibit at the arts center showcases her versatility as a multi-purpose artist who works with a mixture of styles and techniques. Despite challenges – including the profound loss of her husband – Gibbs finds solace in connecting with other artists and her teaching.

“To make it as a business, I always dreamed of it,” she reflected of her job at the arts center. “To be your boss and to work from home and it’s here.”

As for the future, Gibbs envisions expanding her reach through crochet and coffee and coloring classes, as well as pursuing new projects that inspire her creativity.

“I have a project I am working on now, which is a blessing,” she acknowledged.

Gibbs also has advice for other artists gleaned from her own journey:

“Find your passion and your gift,” she emphasized, “because if you work at it, you will be blessed. When you work at what you love, it doesn’t feel like work at all. So, go after your dreams and passions.”
