Libraries partner with museum to educate kids on American Revolution

The Camden County Board of Commissioners is partnering this summer with the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia for library offerings designed to educate elementary-school students and their families on the war.

Beginning next month, museum educators will visit county library system branches as part of the partner initiative, Revolution at the Museum, a program meant to captivate young minds with stories of the war as well as hands-on, interactive activities.

“The American Revolution holds profound significance in our nation’s history, and it all began right here in our own backyard,” said Commissioner Melinda Kane, liaison to the library system.

“By educating children about this pivotal period in a way that is both accessible and exciting, we aim to make a lasting impact. We are thrilled to kick off this program next month.”

Locations for the museum program include:

  • William G. Rohrer Memorial Library-Haddon Township Branch
  • Gloucester Township Blackwood Rotary Public Library
  • M. Allan Vogelson Regional Branch
  • South County Regional Branch
  • Riletta L. Cream Ferry Avenue Branch
  • Nilsa I. Cruz-Perez Downtown Branch

The Museum of the American Revolution – formerly the American Revolution Center – shares stories about the diverse people and complex events that sparked the conflict, and what it describes as America’s ongoing experiment in liberty, equality and self-government, according to the museum website.

Just steps away from Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, the private nonprofit opened in 2017 and is also dedicated to telling stories about the nation’s founding.

Established in 1921, the library system serves various Camden County communities, including Camden, Bellmawr, Gloucester Township, Haddon Township, Merchantville, Winslow Township and Voorhees Township.
