He was born in Haddon Heights and graduated from Camden Catholic High School and St. Francis College in Pennsylvania. He served in the Army during World War II, and then graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1953. After an internship at Cooper Hospital and residencies at Cleveland Clinic and The Graduate Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania, he became the first neurosurgeon to have his practice and office in Southern New Jersey.

Harold’s surgical career spanned five decades. He served as Chief of Neurosurgery at Cooper, Our Lady of Lourdes, Underwood and Burlington Memorial Hospitals. He later established Neurosurgical Consultants of Cherry Hill, partnering later with several other neurosurgeons. He was first to introduce laser surgery at Cooper Hospital and he retired with Honorary Memberships at all four of the above hospitals.

Harold’s dedication to his profession was only outweighed by his love and devotion to his wife of 63 years, Frances, and their seven children. Harold loved gardening, boating, fishing, skiing and golfing. He spent many years enjoying these activities at their home on Thompson Lake in Oxford, Maine.

Dr. Rushton was predeceased by his parents, sister and his daughter Jayne. He is survived by his wife, his brother John, children David (Debra), Mark (Alla), Christopher (Andreza), Daniel (Sharon), Leslie (Barry), Nan, and son-in-law George. He proudly leaves behind 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and seven nieces.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Jan. 21, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Christ The King Roman Catholic Church, 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield with Mass of Christian Burial to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
