Police are conducting marked and unmarked patrols of local roads checking for violations related to pedestrian safety as well as conducting several decoy operations at various dates and times throughout the township.
The Cherry Hill Police Department has been participating in a pedestrian safety enforcement campaign, targeting not only drivers who fail to stop and yield the right-of-way for pedestrians using crosswalks, but also pedestrians who cross roads improperly.
Police will be conducting marked and unmarked patrols of local roads checking for violations related to pedestrian safety as well as conducting several decoy operations at various dates and times throughout the township.
The decoy operations involve plain clothes police officers walking across crosswalks with other officers positioned at predetermined distance where motorists approaching the crosswalk from beyond that point have sufficient time and distance to recognize the presence of a pedestrian and safely stop their vehicle. The plain clothes officers then notify patrol units of anyone who fails to stop for the crossing officer and those patrol cars will stop and address each violation.
According to state police statistics, 167 pedestrians lost their lives on New Jersey roads in 2016, down from 173 in 2015. In 2014, 170 pedestrians lost their lives in New Jersey. The Cherry Hill Police Department recognizes the importance of proactive enforcement to help reduce the number of incidents involving pedestrian activity.
