Sussman brothers’ legacy lives on through Katz JCC basketball tournament
Brothers Andy and Eric Sussman always loved basketball. When they were growing up in the 1970s, the brothers could frequently found playing at the JCC. After both brother passed away following separate bouts with cancer, their family and the JCC decided to honor them with a fundraiser. The Sussman 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, now in its 12th year, is held annually, with proceeds going toward the JCC’s youth basketball programs and Coaches vs. Cancer.
Cherry Hill Chickens continues advocating for backyard chicken program in the township
A group of Cherry Hill residents and backyard chicken enthusiasts appeared before Cherry Hill Township Council for the first time on April 11, 2016, with the goal of getting an ordinance passed so residents could keep chickens in their backyards. More than a year later, the group continues to advocate for a backyard chicken program as township officials continue to study the issue.
Empowering refugee women, empowering refugee communities
When Cherry Hill resident Mona Lari heard about the enormity of need among Syrian refugees coming to South Jersey, she felt compelled to help. An active member of the Islamic Center of South Jersey, Lari organized a gathering of her sisters and their families, which consisted of more than 30 refugee families who assembled at the Islamic Center of South Jersey in Palmyra on Friday, June 16 to break their fast at sundown as part of the holy month of Ramadan.
John Stankiewicz representing Cherry Hill West in 2017 Carpenter Cup
Cherry Hill High School West had a representative on the Olympic/Colonial team in this year’s 2017 Carpenter Cup tournament. John Stankiewicz, a senior pitcher with Cherry Hill West, represented his team in this year’s tournament. The Olympic/Colonial team advanced to the tournament’s semifinal round last Friday after winning its first two games of the tournament.
Cherry Hill East grad honored at reception
A Cherry Hill East 2017 graduate was one of 20 New Jersey high school graduates honored at a special reception last Monday. Elizabeth Lee was honored for being accepted into the United States Military Academy. U.S. Senator Bob Menendez hosted the reception to honor New Jerseyans who were accepted into the four U.S. military service academies this year.
