On Thursday June 29, DT1 Cross Fit of Cherry Hill awarded four college scholarships to local students. Each scholarship, worth $5,000, was given to outstanding young people with Type 1 diabetes. This was the first DT1 Charities college scholarships awarded. Students who applied were chosen based on the following attributes: Character, hard work, perseverance, need, and the love of learning.

This year’s recipients were Matthew Murphy, Delran High School; Jada Simon, Clayton High School; Gene Masso, Sterling and Morgan Horner, Kingsway Regional High School.

Brad and Meredith Stadler, owners of DT1 Cross Fit were inspired to create this “Cross Fit with a purpose” due to their own personal experience. Their son was diagnosed with DT1 at the age of 7. This autoimmune disease has no known cure and if left untreated can be fatal. The management of administering insulin can be tedious and the health care costs associated exorbitant.

Cross Fit DT1 donates 10 percent of gross revenue directly to DT1 Charities, a 501c3 non-profit organization. The funds go directly to dedicated type 1 diabetes research, awareness programs, and direct contributions to families struggling to cover their medical costs. Since its inception a little over a year ago, more than $50,000 has been raised to date for DT1 Charities.

DT1 Cross Fit will be moving to True Fitness on Kings Avenue in the fall of this year. The growth will offer the ability to increase its commitment to not only making a difference in their members’ lives; but the lives of the community, especially those struggling with type 1 diabetes.
