At Monday night’s Cherry Hill Township Council meeting, Fleisher voiced his opinion on student protests and school security.
A township official and parent of a Cherry Hill High School East senior spoke in favor of a student’s right to protest at Monday night’s Cherry Hill Township Council meeting.
At the end of the meeting, council president Dave Fleisher expressed his opinion on school safety and the ability for students to protest in support of their beliefs.
“As a proud parent of a high school senior, I did want to make sure that it was loud and clear that I know my wife and I support our children’s rights to be able to peacefully and safely express their beliefs and stand up for what they believe to be right,” Fleisher said.
“And whether that’s their form of expression, protest, excetera, I would be very proud of my daughter and all of our youth to have found the right forum to respectfully again express their freedoms,” Fleisher continued.
Students at Cherry Hill East protested the last two days against the placing of history teacher Timothy Locke on administrative leave after comments he made during a conversation about school safety and the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. Students held a sit-in on Monday and then a walkout on Tuesday, with the goal of having Locke reinstated to his position.
Fleisher also asked Cherry Hill Public Schools to step up and take action to improve security at its buildings.
“I call on our board of education to take further action regarding school safety,” he said. “I look forward to working with the mayor to make sure schools expeditiously continue to address this vital need.”
“No issue is greater than the safety of our children,” Fleisher added.
