Math and Literacy Night brings families together

Event invites teachers to plan activities for students and parents

Teachers involved in Family Math and Literacy Night volunteered their time to plan interactive activities based on this year’s theme of camping.

Eleanor Rush Intermediate School hosted its sixth annual Family Math and Literacy Night last month so students and families could bond and participate in educational activities.

“This event brings families together and gives the opportunity for parents to go to their child’s school in the evening,” said reading specialist Kimberly Porter, who added that all family members were welcome, including siblings.

“At Family Math and Literacy Night, teachers plan interactive and fun activities in the subjects of reading and math,” Porter explained. “These are light, carefree activities that parents can participate in with students.”

The event began in 2015 and has a different theme every year, with all decorations and activities related to that theme.

“This year’s theme is camp,” Porter said. “Our slogan is, ‘It’s S’more Fun at Camp Rush.’”

In addition to educational reading and math activities at Family Math and Literacy Night, a photo booth was set up with camp-related props and accessories for students and families to have mementoes from the event. Boy and Girl Scout troop representatives were also on hand to recruit for the organizations.

“The event gets students and families connected in school settings, and parents can see their children shine in a light they don’t often see,” Porter noted. “Students and parents can have fun together and play games in math and reading.”

Rush Intermediate decided to skip the event in 2020 and ‘21 because of the pandemic, and Porter was excited to bring it back. She relied on older students to draw younger kids.

“The fifth graders did skits to get other students to come,” Porter pointed out. “They recorded videos that will be put on the Rush School Morning News for the whole school to watch.”
