The township board of education discussed the hire of a new member at its Sept. 19 meeting, a move that will increase membership from nine to 10.
“The board held a special meeting to conduct interviews of potential board of education candidates,” said School Superintendent Stephen M. Cappello. “Six residents interviewed for the position.”
He added that members recommended one candidate who was expected to be voted on this week.
The board consists of President Laura Fitzwater, Vice President Christine Turner, Michael Bramhall, Daniel P. Gaffney, Donna Marie Iacone, Ed Kenney, Kathleen Quinn, Christine R. Trampé and Christine L. Turner.
Board members serve on four committees: curriculum and student activities, facilities and transportation, finance and personnel, and policy and legislation. Four of them serve on each committee, with Trampé as delegate.
“The hiring process involved the submission of a resume and letter of interest review, followed by an in-person interview,” Cappello explained. “A panel of current board members asked questions relevant to board service.”
A candidate’s background is considered by the board, as are experiences, interest, capacity, prior service and commitment. He or she needs to be cleared through a New Jersey Department of Education background check, a process that takes about two weeks.
“I anticipate that the candidate will be sworn in to join the board at the October meeting,” Cappello said of the session on Oct. 18.
The new board member will serve a one-year term, from Oct. 18 through Dec. 31, 2023.
“As a point of pride, I think it speaks volumes that so many qualified candidates are eager to volunteer their time to help serve the students, staff, and families of this community,” Cappello said.
