The annual Mount Laurel Police and Fire Golf Outing benefiting the Mount Laurel Fraternity Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 191 and Mount Laurel International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 4408 unions will be held at Golden Pheasant Golf Club on Friday, Sept. 9.
The outing was initiated in 2005 solely by the officers. Aaron Harty, president of the Mount Laurel FOP, noted that the officers’ partnership with firefighters at the golf outing began in 2016 and allowed both departments to benefit from the exposure.
“Six years ago, we joined forces with the fire department, ” he said. “We figured it would be better for both of us if we tapped into both resources to get more people out (at the golf outing).”
The event has taken place at Golden Pheasant Golf Club for the past few years but has also been held at the Ramblewood and Indian Springs country clubs. Registration for next month’s outing begins at 11 a.m., followed by a lunch from Wegmans of Mount Laurel. There will be a noon shotgun start and dinner after golfing.
Prizes for the event will be handed out at the end of the day. Participating adults (ages 21 and over) will be permitted to drink beer while they play. Cost is $125 per golfer, $500 per foursome and $480 for a foursome if registered before Aug. 15. Sponsorship opportunities are currently available.
Scott Callahan, president of the IAFF Local 4408, said the funds generated from the event will go toward both unions, who then give back to the community.
“A lot of that money we try to put back into the community,” he noted. “We sponsor teams, or if there’s something happening in town, or if someone needs help, we try to jump in and assist as best we can.”
The unions were sponsors of the inaugural Mount Laurel Flag Football League, chartered for the local Boy Scouts and partnered with the district’s Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) for various charity events.
Harty said the union hopes more residents will participate in this year’s event.
“We try to get out there and have our community members come out and golf with us,” he said. “It’s not exclusive for just firefighters or police officers; we encourage the community to come out and join us.”
