The Moorestown Service Clubs Council has selected longtime residents Kathy and John Logue as the 2022 Citizens of The Year.
Both Kathy and John have served on several different boards and committees and give back to the community they’ve called home since 1979.
A dinner in honor of their award has been postponed due to the pandemic.
Kathy and John are neighbors of former recipients David Hess and Debbie Browning Hess, who were selected as the 2019 recipients, and David Schill, the 2011 recipient.
“On our street there were three people who, on this one little two-block long street, who were named Citizens of the Year,” John explained. “Which is kind of neat .. probably the only street in town.”
Kathy and John are engrained with community activism. John was born and raised in Barrington, New Jersey, where his father was a town councilman, chairman of the planning board and chairman of the zoning board. He also coached John and his brother’s little league baseball team. His mother received Barrington’s Citizen of the Year Award.
Kathy was raised in Stratford, New Jersey, where her father was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts and received the Silver Beaver Award for great volunteering in scouting. Her mother was active in the Altar and Rosary Society.
“One Saturday every couple of weeks, they rotated among the teams in the league,” he said, “We went up to the baseball fields and we cut the grass and raked the leaves and dragged the fields. We didn’t expect anyone to do that for us.”
John and Kathy met in high school through Explorer Scouts, a nationwide organization that helped students focus on specific or nonspecific career paths.
They met for the first time in the summer of 1971.
“We had a council-wide camping trip to a Boy Scout camp in Pine Hill, down in Camden County, and her post and my post went and we met each other there,” John said.
After reconnecting at a ski trip at Camelback Mountain Resort one year later, John and Kathy eventually got married and decided to move to Moorestown after attending a friend’s wedding on Main Street at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church.
John and Kathy became active volunteer coaches of their kids’ softball and soccer teams as well as helping with scouting. Their oldest daughter and two granddaughters now live in Hammonton, their middle daughter lives in western Pennsylvania and their son lives in Philadelphia.
“All three are doing well, we’re very proud of them,” said John.
Among her and his many services, Kathy is currently the president of the non-profit Friends of Percheron Park, Inc. and is a board member of the Tree Planting and Preservation Committee. She was also a board member and secretary of the Moorestown Business Association (MBA) from 2006-2009 and served as the board of education’s vice president from 1991-1995.
John has served on the planning board, Economic Development Advisory Committee, zoning board, the West Moorestown Task Force and was co-chair of Make It Moorestown Celebration Committee.
He also served as vice chairman and chairman of the Republican Municipal Committee, District 1, for a combined total of 20 years.
Moorestown’s 2022 Citizens of the Year are ready for the younger generation to follow in their footsteps.
“We’ve given it our best shot; maybe we did it right, maybe we did it wrong,” John said, “but it’s time now for the 30-somethings and the 40-somethings to step up .. pass the torch on.”
