Moorestown’s winter adult programs

Activities include line dancing, Tai Chi and Zumba.

‘Line Dancing for Adults’ has been very popular at the rec department and will be offered from Jan. 24 through Feb. 28 on Monday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Each week a new dance will be taught. For people returning to the class, new steps will be introduced to broaden one’s repertoire. Pop and country music keep the feet moving. Instructor, Lisa Cotter, is the founder of “Get to Steppin’” line dance company and has been teaching since 1994.

Drop-in fitness classes make exercise easy to fit into any busy schedule – create an account online and attend any class that is convenient, the monthly schedule is posted on the REC website. Many classes to choose from; Zumba, Barre, Tabata/Barre and Hip Hop for Adults. No pre-registration required.

Tai Chi is offered on Tuesday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. beginning Jan. 11 through March 1. This is a great way to tone the body and relax the mind.

Instructor Wenrong Zou Atkins is a resident of Moorestown and has practiced Tai Chi for many years. Her class focuses on correct posture and breathing control.

Tai Chi’s movements are fluid, graceful and well balanced. Class begins with 10 minutes of warm up exercises, followed by 15 minutes of learning basic tai chi skills and the last 35 minutes are spent learning the simplified 18 steps.

Atkins says, “Softness is stronger than hardness, moving in a curve is better than a straight line, yielding is more efficient than confronting. Tai Chi is a sport that strengthens the body as well as the mind from within.”

‘Zumba Gold’ is a class for active older adults and has a morning class on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and an evening class on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Zumba is a dance fitness program that incorporates latin dance moves and interval training. It targets many different muscle groups and incorporates stretching, toning and cardio with warm-up and cool-down periods. Musical genres range from salsa and meringue to hip hop and country.
