“In the past 2 1⁄2 months Cherry Hill Police have investigated 10 cases of vehicles stolen while they are left running and unattended outside of various businesses such as convenience stores, restaurants, medical facilities or fitness clubs.

“These incidents have occurred at all times through the day including overnight hours. The
majority of these vehicles were recovered abandoned in other jurisdictions, sometimes having
been involved in accidents or otherwise damaged. The Cherry Hill Police Department would like to remind the public that these auto thefts are easily preventable and are the result of crimes of opportunity.

“To prevent additional victims please keep in mind the following tips:

  • When parking your vehicle for any amount of time be sure to turn off your car,
remove the key, and lock the doors.
  • If your vehicle is equipped with an alarm system, use the key fob to “chirp” the
alarm, indicating that the vehicle is locked and making it obvious to anyone
    watching.
  • Take note of your surroundings prior to exiting your vehicle. Be aware of persons
in the area, either on foot or in a vehicle, watching your activity. If you notice
anyone or anything suspicious, contact the police department so that we may
    respond and investigate.
  • Be aware that businesses with high traffic and quick turnaround times, such as
convenience stores, are targeted by perpetrators who realize people will leave
their cars running while they enter the store for a few minutes.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the Investigative Unit at
