An all-inclusive and accessible playground is coming to Washington Lake Park as the result of a collaborative community effort.
That effort took a significant leap forward recently with the announcement that Washington Township will get a $750,000 Green Acres grant to help pay for the project.
“This additional funding means we can start the project sooner than originally anticipated,” Mayor Laurie Burns announced on social media before the township’s 4th of July parade.
“All-inclusive playgrounds provide a space where children of all abilities can play together, fostering a sense of community and belonging,” she added. “This playground will be a place where everyone can enjoy the outdoors and create lasting memories.”
The project still requires another $250,000. That’s where local McDonald’s owner/operators Patrick Power and Keith Smolar and the Blackbird Foundation have stepped in. On July 10, they kicked off fundraising efforts for what is now called the Blackbird Foundation’s Playground Project.
The goal is to raise all necessary funds by September to ensure the park opens next spring. The Sewell-based foundation is dedicated to enhancing the lives of children with special needs through community projects and support programs. Its mission is to create inclusive environments where all children can thrive.
“We are deeply grateful for the support from our local McDonald’s owners who did not hesitate when presented the opportunity to support this project,” noted Blackbird founder Nicole Lannutti. ” … We strive to eliminate the physical and social barriers of exclusion and ensure children of all abilities can join the fun. Every child deserves to play.
“Together, we can build a legacy that will be cherished and enjoyed for decades to come.”
On remaining Wednesdays this month from 5 to 7 p.m., a portion of total sales from dining in, to-go orders and deliveries through the McDonald’s app will be donated to the playground project. The foundation kicked off its fundraising series on July 10 at the McDonald’s in Turnersville’s Cross Keys Plaza.
Remaining locations taking part in the fundraising are:
- July 17: Glassboro, 656 Delsea Drive, Glassboro
- July 24: Hurfville, 122 Delsea Drive, Sewell
- July 31: Kohl’s Plaza, 5801 Route 42, Turnersville
“As local business owners, we believe in giving back to our community, and partnering with The Blackbird Foundation for their playground project aligns perfectly with our values,” noted Patrick Powers, a local McDonald’s owner/operator.
“This project will make a real difference for many families, and we encourage everyone to join us … to support our children in Gloucester County.”
