Eastern grad tells story of his Jewish ancestors

Eastern Regional High School has announced the return of one of its distinguished alumni, Taylor Shiroff, for the launch of his highly anticipated book, “Next Year in America: A Family History of Eastern European Jews.”

The launch will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Katz JCC in Cherry Hill. Scheduled for release on May 21, the book not only delves into the journey of four Jewish families from the Russian empire to Philadelphia, its sales will benefit the city’s HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) organization, created in the early 20th century to aid Jewish refugees and asylum seekers in the city, and now assisting other individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Shiroff is an economic research analyst and genealogist who graduated from Rutgers University. His passion for history and storytelling led to his book, a tale of his own ancestors’ experiences. He lives in Cleveland, where he pursue his interests in music and historical research.

“Next Year in America” meticulously traces the arduous yet inspiring paths of Eastern European Jewish immigrants as they seek refuge and opportunity in America. Through the lens of Shiroff’s own ancestors, readers are transported to an era marked by strife, resilience and the pursuit of the American dream.

Shiroff’s narrative captures the essence of the immigrants, their struggles and their eventual assimilation into American society.

“This book is a testament to the indomitable spirit of our ancestors and serves as a poignant reminder of the universal quest for freedom and dignity,” the author remarked. “By supporting HIAS Philadelphia, we honor the legacy of those who paved the way for us and reaffirm our commitment to championing the rights of all individuals.”

Praise for “Next Year in America” includes this statement from another historian: “An impeccably researched, very touching and wonderfully edifying read.” A member of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides hailed it as “historically accurate” and “profoundly moving.”
