An Asian American and Pacific Islander festival will take place from noon to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 5 at Cherry Hill High School West.
The event coincides with May’s observance of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and will include about 20 food vendors, henna painting, dance and martial arts demonstrations and activities such as jewelry making. Also represented will be some religious organizations.
“The idea is to communicate our culture and share our heritage and have a good time,” explained Nina Gao, the president of the Asian American Alliance in South Jersey. “Hopefully we improve communication with other groups a little bit and educate people from other backgrounds to let them know what our culture is like.”
Performances will be from the Huaxia Chinese School, the Chinese School of South Jersey, a Korean school and students from the Vietnamese Cultural Club at Cherry Hill East. Gao noted that as in the past, the festival will have a number of groups represented, and people of all backgrounds are welcome.
“It’s not just an Asian American event, it really has people from all background,” she said.
This year’s guests will include Mayor David Fleisher and Congressmen Andy Kim.
