James McQueston’s seventh graders at Deptford Middle School have been designing, building and testing custom ankle-foot orthoses for a patient with multiple sclerosis using simple materials and on a $10 budget. Groups of three to four students were challenged to create a comfortable orthotic to provide foot and ankle support, allowing upward mobility at the ankle while preventing the foot from moving downward.
