Mantua Mayor’s Message for week of Sept. 17

Dear Community Friends,

We are pleased to welcome Memory Lane Antiques as the newest small business in our community, and we extend our best wishes for success and a long-lasting presence in our community.  I had the distinct honor of presenting a proclamation on behalf of the township committee at their ribbon cutting ceremony and official grand opening on Saturday morning, Sept. 16.

The owner of Memory Lane Antiques, Maria Ostrowski, brings many years of experience as an antique dealer.  She has 22 antique dealers at this location offering a diverse range of items, from vintage jewelry to primitive farmhouse tools, mid century modern furniture and vintage clothing.

Memory Lane Antiques is located at 106 Mantua Blvd. Stop by and check things out, and join us by supporting Memory Lane Antiques and all the small businesses here in Mantua.

Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto, Committeewoman Eileen Lukens and I were thrilled to present a township proclamation to Mantua’s “Hometown Hero” Anthony Mirigliani at the Pitt Hopkins Fundraising Event at Bonesaw Brewing Company in Glassboro on Saturday evening, Sept. 16.

The proclamation declared Sept.18 as Pitt Hopkins Awareness Day aka Anthony Mirigliani Day in our community. Thanks to Claudette, Frank, Juliette and of course, Anthony Mirigliani for allowing us to be a small part of this very special occasion.

I’d also like to extend our gratitude to the community for coming together this year to raise over $17,000.00 for Pitt Hopkins and for Anthony. We really are the definition of America’s true hometown community.

The Mantua Township Police Department’s K-9 Unit is funded solely by your donations and through fundraising events. Taxpayer monies are not used to pay for this unit within our agency. This is a very common practice throughout our county and south jersey.

I’d like to ask for your support as our K-9 Unit is hosting a Halloween Beef and Beer on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Kernan Center located at 240 Main St. in Mantua. Tickets are $75.00 and can be purchased in-person at the MTPD or by contacting csmroz@mantuatownship.com or sjwolfsgruber@mantuatownship.com.

People for People will be hosting their Veteran’s Picnic at Total Turf on Lambs Road on Sunday, Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. People for People is a nonprofit organization that works on assisting veterans with services, and by providing them with resources for jobs and any other guidance they may need. The focus of this event is to attract younger veterans and their families so they can learn about these services. The picnic will host approximately 800 to 1000 people.  We are always striving to better serve veterans here in Mantua Township, and are thrilled the picnic will be held here in our community. We applaud the efforts of Total Turf!  For more information about People for People, please check out their website at https://welcome.pfpfoundation.org/.

After a very lengthy legal process, the township was able to foreclose on properties that have not paid their property taxes. We use this process as a tool to compel property owners to pay their taxes, as well as to remove non performing properties from tax rolls which helps to stabilize the tax base. Those properties where the property owners did not pay their taxes, became the ownership of the Township through the foreclosure process. Once a determination has been made that the land is not needed for public use, the Township is able to sell the parcels to contiguous land owners or at a private sale to the highest bidder. Currently, there are 15 properties that will be sold by the Township as a revenue generator by the Township. For more information about these properties, please visit https://mantuatownship.com/resources/bid-opportunities/.

The Mantua Township Veterans Commission and Committeeman John Legge would like to remind you of the Mantua VFW Post 7679 annual 5K and 1 Mile Running for Vets on Sunday, Oct. 1 at Chestnut Branch Park.  To learn more, and to register and donate please go to https://runsignup.com/Race/NJ/Mantua/MantuaVFW5KRunningforVets.

Micro surfacing has been completed in the Crescent Hollow, Chapel Ridge and Spring Valley developments. This finishes our major work for this year’s road program.  We still have some individual municipal roadways that are a part of the program that will be addressed asap in the near future.

Upcoming Township Meetings and Events:

  • Fire Hydrant Flushing will occur during the week of Sept. 25 through 29.
  • Thursday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. is the next Veterans Commission Meeting at the Township Building.
  • Mantua Township Police Department will be hosting a “Coffee with a Cop” on Tuesday, Oct. 10 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Target and Starbucks on Woodbury-Glassboro Road.  Stop by for a free cup of coffee and chat with our officers from the PD, myself and other township committee members.

On behalf of Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto, myself, and the entire township committee – we look forward to continuing our service with honesty, integrity and trustful leadership.

Respectfully,

Mayor Robert T. Zimmerman, MAS
