The Moorestown rec’s adult softball league starts Tuesday, May 16. Teams and players are needed. This is a co-ed, slow pitch league that plays on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. under the lights at Jeff Young softball fields. Ten defensive players are allowed on the field, three must be women. Teams are responsible for their own equipment and balls.
“Everybody plays, everybody bats, nobody sits,” said Dave Lukridge, who has been playing in the league for 26 seasons. “I think because we don’t keep standings during the season and don’t have umpires it tends to make everything relaxed. It’s like back in the old days when you were 10 years old and said, ‘Hey, let’s go down to the field and play a game,’ It’s like that, a neighborhood pickup game.”
The last week of the season, there is a one pitch tournament.
“This is the only time it’s a little competitive,” Lukridge said. “With one pitch, all teams play one another and the pitcher on your team pitches to you. You get one pitch to hit the ball, one swing, one pitch. If you don’t swing you’re out, if you hit a foul ball you’re out.”
“You have to put the ball in play,” Lukridge noted. “It’s awesome, it goes so fast. Every team plays one another and eventually the team with the best record against the other teams is the one pitch champ for the season.”
