Delran council’s second public meeting of the new year on Jan. 10 featured a tribute to longtime township resident and Vietnam veteran Earl E. Courter.
Courter was cited for his bravery and service to the country, much of it during his four years in Vietnam. His awards include a bronze star and Purple Heart, earned when he lost a leg to wounds sustained during his service.
But that did not stop Courter from helping others, according to Mayor Gary Catrambone. He is a lifelong member of VFW Post 3620 in Gloucester City and is active in Delran’s VFW Post 3020. Courter has served with veterans organizations in numerous capacities, including post quartermaster and treasurer of the New Jersey Disabled American Veterans.
Outside of the military, Courter has taken time to help others. He was honored by council for his selflessness and willingness to give back to the community.
“I’ve lived in Delran since 1978,” Courter said. “I’ve lived in numerous towns as well, but I have no problems with Delran. It’s the best place I have ever lived. They have taken care of me and I know how Delran feels about veterans.”
After applause, hugs and handshakes, the meeting moved on to approval of an ordinance allowing council to exceed municipal budget appropriation limits and establish a cap bank. The township fire department then announced a group of new fire officers and reported that there will be no fire elections until November.
Catrambone and council both offered reports on township activity.
“There is a community solar program available for Delran residents,” said the mayor. “We fought to bring the program here and we got it. Right here on Delran Parkway, factories and warehouses are already participating in the program. This is an opt-in program so you need to sign up. If you choose to sign up, you can save $25 on your bill and you can find more details about this program on the website.
“Whether you are on a low or moderate income, you can afford this program,” Catrambone added. “As long as you have a PSE&G account, you are eligible. Sign up soon, because it is believed that this program will fill up in 30 days.”
Council members offered thanks for a number of efforts.
“I just wanted to say thank you to the township of Delran for honoring our veterans,” said Marlowe Smith. “Thank you to our first responders. I know it’s tough to do what you do, especially during the holidays.”
“Thank you to the firefighters for the installation dinner invite,” said Lynn Jenny. “You did a wonderful job preparing it and cooking dinner. I also want to honor the ladies auxiliary for 100 years of support and service.”
“I would like to echo everyone’s thanks and congratulations and I hope you will join us when we jump into the ocean for the special Olympics,” Tom Lyon noted.
Council President Tyler Burrell was the last to speak at the meeting.
“Thank you to all of our first responders,” he said. “You answer the call no matter what. We and the residents of Delran appreciate all you do. Good luck to all the new fire officers as well.”
